With classic ivy-shaped leaves, it’s hard to resist this timeless, climbing, evergreen shrub. It’s hardy and easy to care for, plus its variegated leaves make a point of interest. Mature plants may grow small, yellow-green flowers in autumn which are followed by black fruit.
The word ‘Helix’ in this plant’s name translates from Greek to mean ‘twist and turn’ which is a reference to how the vines rotate as they grow.
It’s estimated that across the different species of Ivy, there are nearly 400 cultivars, and some make popular houseplants, too. However, to grow this plant outside, it’ll need full sun or partial shade, and it likes its soil to be well drained. The Ivy Hedera Helix works well in a variety of locations from hanging baskets to patio pots or planted into a flowerbed.
